Gaming arguments are so funny. Companies change through the years. It's dumb to have allegiance to a company outside of using their services cause you like them. Microsoft is clearly on top right now when it comes to the hard core gamers. Nintendo has the older and retro gamers hooked on casual games, for people who have lives outside of video games, but still enjoy to play from time to time. And Sony is versatile and good at doing so, but they're not the best, just a jack of all trades. I don't even see what I did there. |

Honestly, I'm mostly amused at how both Sony and Microsoft are just outright copying Nintendo now; a few years back, no one really saw what a runaway success the Wii and shit would be (for better or worse). The entire thing is funny... but at the same time kinda sad. (hey, I still like Nintendo despite it all, really... Other M was awesome [though George seems to hate it]) |

That's cause they've had their name in the business much longer than both Microsoft and Sega. Folks who wouldn't normally play games, but are interested in them, are much more likely to buy from a business that's been doing what they do for a while. And then there's the fanboy market, loyal customers that have been under their commercial grasps since childhood. They might be casual players with money to spend on a gaming console, or on occasion they are the lifetime gamers who don't like change. And then they get a very small hybrid audience of people who like retro gaming cause vintage is so in right now, and either: A)Have money to waste on an overpriced emulator with a limited game selection. B)Enjoy and use Virtual Console, but also like playing new games from old franchises like Mario or Zelda. There's probably other markets that I'm completely unaware of because I have a limited view of the world, and I can never truly know everything that's happening on our planet. |

You are forgetting the number 1 reason that nintendo is doing well: they make awesome games. You fail to give credit where its due: they are outstanding game developers. Its not all marketing and advertising. Their games have a broader appeal, thats a lot of it too. The popular misnomer during the gamecube era was that "nintendo was doing bad" because xbox/ps2 outsold it in units like 8 to 1, but the reality of it was that whilst their consoles weren't the best sellers, they still dominated software sales charts, and virtually everybody with their hardware was buying lots of their software, not just madden and third party shit. In fact, I'm pretty sure that over the past 20 years they have been out of the number 1 position on software sales charts all of like, 6 months or something. "overpriced emulator", you mean, because its not a free, pirating emulator? You should substitute the word "overpriced" with "legal" there, $5 a pop is not overpriced. I enjoy their games more than those of Microsoft, most definitely. But that's still a matter of personal opinion and not true fact. I play my original Sony Playstation disks on my multifunctional desktop PC that I've built and subsequently upgraded over the past six years using recycled computer parts and clearance items at computer shops and outside of dumpsters. I just use my CD drive and a legal emulator. Hardware can't be copyrighted, just patented, therefore software that emulates the processes of a console is completely legal. But you have no right to argue about what is legal. Didn't/don't you (not sure if you still do) smoke weed and use other illegal substances recreationally? |

Orajel... I'm surprised you fell for that. Yes I love Microsoft. I think that they care more for their users than the other companies. Despite their shortcomings (which are many), MS has always seemed to be the one to appreciate the community and listen to what they have to say. So it sucks seeing them take a mainstream route (and such an obvious one at that), but I'd hope you'd know that I'm joking. I love Nintendo, I just hate the Wii. |

No no no, I'm not discouraging pirating software, nor saying its bad. Its just a false pretense to call an emulator "overpriced", when its only on the basis of comparing it to other illegal pirated emulation. Yeah the emulation software itself isn't whats illegal, its the roms. Pithy - the Wii rocks. They have taken "mainstream route", but look at stuff like metroid prime trilogy, zelda, mario galaxy, obviously there is at least effort towards hardcore gamers. Now if only they would reproduce 1080, with as unsuccessful as the cubes version was, I think the franchise is dead now :(. Sad, I thought hte cubes 1080 was fucking great and extremely underrated. |

I dunno. I don't like the Wii because I don't like motion controls. However it seems like Nintendo's attitude about it "being just about the games" is just another way of being cheap towards the consumer. I'm not saying Nintendo screwed up by not giving us a blu ray player or any of the other bells and whistles, but online is a huge deal. Paying for online does suck, but having a party system like XBL can be such a great thing. Nintendo went their own way and decided to not reproduce in 1080, make a decent online service, etc. Like it or not, those are big things and Nintendo was just like "YEAH BUT IT MOVES AND SHIT!" |

Well motion controls aren't the entire epitome of the Wii. And "being just about the games" is called focusing on what is important. Their less than stellar online features is partly how they make their games family friendly. That is one thing nintendo focuses on, could you imagine playing super smash bros brawl while actually being able to talk to the opponents? Have you heard the shit kids say on online games? Obviously, this would inhibit the 'family friendliness' of online game play. It limits the potential, obviously, but it is what makes their games safe and enjoyable for the entire family, and not just the 16-22 year old crowd. |

Hey now, I'm not against focusing on what's important. Yes it is important to focus on the games, but many people in Nintendo's community (or, well, fans) have made it quite clear that they want a better online service (not saying XBL or anything), better graphics, etc. I don't care what anyone says, graphics do make a difference in games. I'm not saying the Wii was a failure. Financially, the thing is a success. Believe it or not, I really wanted a Wii before it was released. I planned on getting one about a year after, when all 3 consoles were out and it was clearer which console would suit me best. Wii had a few good games, 360 had many more and superior online (which had a big impact on me). I'd have gladly gotten the PS3 is it weren't so expensive at the time and if I knew more than 2 people with it. Now I'm just rambling. |

Pithy - one thing I really like about Wii is that it has broad appeal, no longer do I play a system that is limited to a narrow demographic, I can play it with friends and family, young and old, and everybody in between. Its not something for the exclusive enjoyment of the 18-24 year old nerdy male crowd any more. Sure, if I had a ton of time to kill and little responsibility, I would certainly dig into the XBox/PS3 route a lot more, but I have to game rather casually nowadays due to severe time constraints. As far as graphics goes - the Wii still does have some polished and pleasant looking graphics, look at again, mario galaxy, mario kart, prime trilogy, etc. The framerates hit up in the 60's, and as far as I'm concerned, framerate matters more than texture resolution. Its also how they made the most efficient, small, inexpensive hardware multiplied by 10, and how game development costs a fraction as it does for other systems. Its like 1/5th the size of an xbox, and its still 100 times more efficient at heat dissipation. If it was rendering HD resolutions, it could not be the system it is, size, cost, etc etc. And, it would cost a ton more for developers to produce those games as well. Rambling is fun.
